Summer Camp Is a Place to Grow

Camp Lenox is the place for me.Balance. Determination. Self-confidence. A commitment to excellence. Foundational qualities that you want to impart to your children.

You’re not alone. At Camp Lenox, we share these goals. We’re parents too, and we have high expectations.

Every summer, children from around the nation and around the world come to Camp Lenox and have the time of their lives. Ask any camper what they think of Lenox and you’re likely to hear “It’s the GREATEST place on earth!” (of course, we agree.) And while children are having a great time at camp, they’re busy making life-long friends, developing new skills, and building character.

Have a great time at LenoxReally, this is what summer camp is all about. You have fun, you grow. You go home a little more mature than when you came.

“Having camp in my life has brought meaning to my teenage experience; it has provided an outlet for me to be a leader when I wanted to be, to be quiet when I felt the need to be, to take risks when I felt them necessary, and to, at times, stumble and fail – because it is the ultimate safety net.”

Alex L., Collegian Boy

The following extended quote was given as a speech in English class by one of our campers.

It all started out in the Bloomingdales parking lot on June 23, 2006. I felt a pit inside of my stomach as I waited for the bus to take me on my journey. I looked over at my brother for some self-assurance. His tall and proud stance calmed my anxious state. I looked in the distance and saw the bus approaching. Tears welled up in my eyes when I looked over at my mom, my dad, and my grandma. They were about to let me go for the first time. After much anticipation and love I boarded the bus and sat down next to my brother. I will never forget walking up those three stairs and looking down the perpetually long aisle into a sea of unfamiliar faces. I am so glad that I pushed through my fears and that difficult time because it was my first step to a new chapter in my life.

Camp Lenox has taught me so many lessons and has helped me to mature. Every year I become more and more confident and well adjusted to this new way of life. My first year at camp I was extremely homesick. However, year after year I am less focused on home and more focused on my activities and my camp friends. My tennis skills are another example of how Camp Lenox has helped me to grow. When I first got to camp I could barely keep control of my racket. After my fourth summer my topspin is intact and my forehand is hard to return. My ability to relate to my peers is much stronger than my first summer. Initially, I had difficulty keeping friendships. Now, I am known as the camp masseur for my massage services given in exchange for Nutri-grain bars. I am more famously nicknamed “Squigs” or “Squiggles” for my interesting dance moves. Overall, my camp experiences have positively affected my life.

In conclusion, my time at Camp Lenox has been a life changing adventure. “Time falls away, but we’re reminded Camp Lenox you’ll remain.”

Mike G., Sub-Senior Boys
