Introducing the most important person at Camp Lenox. Someone who knows how Lenox works and what makes it special better than anyone else.
Hello,
My name is Josh and I am from New Jersey. This is my third summer at Lenox and I can't wait to be back with my friends. I'm glad I have you as a counselor this year. I'm looking forward to meeting you, but remember, I'm the veteran here. This is my summer home.
These things are very important to me. In fact, I want to play a lot of tennis so I may make my high school team next year. Rich and Stephanie know me pretty well. They agree with my folks that I should participate in tennis, soccer, and basketball. But...the most important thing about Lenox is the friendships I make. I mean, my school friends are great, but my friends at camp are really special. I think I'll be friends with some of them for life.
I have very high expectations put on me during the school year. It's important for you to know that at Lenox I want to test my independence a little bit. I basically want to follow the camp rules and respect you, but I also want to assert myself more and more. I tend to be precocious for my years because my home life is enriched and I have been exposed to many things at a young age. Also, I am growing up in a large community and that advances one a bit.
I have traveled quite a bit with my family and with my Dad on business trips. My parents both work so we make the most of our time together. We spend time together in the evenings, on weekends and on vacations. But I also want to be with my friends a lot now and that's one of the great things about camp - being with my friends all the time for seven weeks straight.
My parents work hard at instilling appropriate values in me. They don't always succeed. But they mean well and want me to have a meaningful, successful life.
A few things you should know. Even though I am spoiled in some ways and can seem selfish and uncaring, I have a strong need for love and attention. Also, I should tell you I can be difficult at times and make your life miserable. I am blessed with above average intelligence and sometimes outsmart my counselors just for the fun of it.
So I suggest you help me. First, try to understand me, and why I do certain things. Second, take control. I don't mean to limit my freedom and dominate me. I mean let me know that you are confident in my abilities, and not afraid to set limits for me. I need you to be an adult for me - a role model! Someone who I can look up to and respect. I really do not need you to be my best friend. Guide me.
There are some other things you should know. I hate to clean up. I know I have to at camp, but I may fight you for awhile. If you encourage me from the outset and set down the rules about chores, I will follow them. That is, after I have tested them sufficiently.
I have a great deal of love inside me to give. I am basically a happy child and take great pleasure sharing with people of your age. I really believe that if you give me a chance and see beyond our differences in age and background, we can learn and share a great deal together.
I love being at Lenox and hope you understand its meaning and importance to me. I feel that I can help you understand Lenox and people like myself a little better. I hope you can help me understand a little more about you and about your life.
Thanks for listening. I hope we can listen to each other all summer long.
One of your campers,
Josh
