Friends and Memories from Lenox

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Camp Lenox holds a special place in the hearts and minds of those who have attended as campers or staff members. Although it was many years ago that I was a camper, the memories are still so clear. Memories of playing cricket for the first time in my life on the 4th of July and getting thrown in the lake on Camp Birthday. I remember the Pittsfield Tournament, finding a hatchet in a Hatchet Hunt, and the thrill of being called down to the flagpole.

If you're like me, some of your most vivid memories are the people. People who were complete strangers to you at the beginning of the summer. By the end of the summer, however, it felt like you had known them forever. People you may have only spent a short time with and have since lost contact with. Then, after getting back in touch (sometimes after many years), you can pick up right where you left off. The reason? You share that special bond which is Camp Lenox.

We hope that the Alumni section of this website provides you with a chance to recall and share fond memories, reconnect with old friends and possibly make some new ones.

The summers of '74 and '75 which I spent at Lenox are still entirely vivid. No summer memories have ever held a "torch" to them in the 33 years that have passed. In my mind I still see virtually every detail of the camp's topography, the fields, the lake...how is that possible?

Now, I have this idea about sending my son and daughter to Lenox all the way from here in Southern California. It seems like stretch, but who knows? They're only four, so maybe when they're a bit older.

I had the distinction of growing up in Great Neck with Monty Moss as my gym teacher, and my pals (Bobby & Simon) and I were the only kids at Saddle Rock School that went to Lenox back then. We were so proud!

I can relate to this. I worked at Lenox in 75, 76, and 77. quite possibly the best learning experience I had. 40 years on I still remember words of wisdom passed on by Monty Moss and Jack Rohan . . . fantastic concept, brilliant people, lasting values. Learnt so much.

Would also send my kids if possible. New Zealand is a bit too far away unfortunately.
